with Dr. Sunil Kumar, Principal Environmental Engineer
Dr. Kumar discussed air quality historical trends, the air quality over the most recent ozone season and what the models are projecting. He also talked generally about how transportation projects are incorporated into the air quality projections. See his presentation here.
About Dr. Sunil Kumar
Dr. Sunil Kumar is a Principal Environmental Engineer at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) in Washington, DC. He holds M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Sciences & Engg. from a premier university in India and has pursued his post-doctoral research in the field of Environmental Engg at Texas A& M university during the period 2000 through 2002. Besides pursuing research, he also taught two courses in air pollution and was a mentor for a few graduate students pursuing M.S. and Ph.D. degrees there. He joined MWCOG in October 2002 and has been working there since then.
Dr. Kumar currently manages air quality forecasting program and reporting of air quality data to public as part ofa Clean Air Act grant program. He is also involved in the development of emissions inventories for all air pollution sources and coordination of air pollution modeling effort for the Washington region. He coordinates with state air and transportation agencies and local governments to develop air quality plans and air pollution control measures. He manages metro DC area air quality technical advisory committee and helps in the management of the metro DC area air quality policy committee comprising of local elected officials and state and local government officials. He presents results of his technical work needed for planning purposes along with recommendations for appropriate planning options and other related issues to the above committees. He also assists his department in greenhouse gas and climate change efforts.
