Vacancy on the Fairfax County Advisory Social Services Board

Message from Chairman Alan M. Schuman, Advisory Social Services Board

I am reaching out to you as the chairman of the Fairfax County Advisory Social Services Board (ASSB). This citizen board advises the Board of Supervisors on issues related to the services provided by the Department of Family Services (DFS). Currently there is a vacancy in your district for the Advisory Social Services Board. To facilitate appointment, I am forwarding the roles and responsibilities of board members to help assist in attracting the right candidate who is knowledgeable in the area of human services.

Board members represent the community’s perspective on DFS issues and services, review and provide input to the DFS Director on policy, budget, and legislative issues, and advocate for the services provided by DFS. DFS services are wide ranging and include:

· Self Sufficiency Services (Public Assistance and Employment & Training)
· Services for Children, Youth and Families (Foster Care & Adoption, Protection & Preservation Services, Family Engagement, Child Protective Services, and Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention)
· Adult & Aging Services (Area Agency on Aging, Adult Services, Disability Services Planning & Development)
· Office for Children (School Aged Child Care (SACC), Child Care Assistance & Referral, Community Education & Provider Services, Head Start)
· Office for Women & Domestic and Sexual Violence Services

If you are aware of anyone in your community who meets the criteria attached and you feel would make an excellent contribution to our efforts, please forward me their contact information and we will work with the supervisor’s office on the next steps. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Nannette Bowler, the Director of the Department of Family Services. If you think it would be beneficial for one of us to attend one of your meetings to present this opportunity in person to your members, we would happy to do so. Thank you for your assistance.

Alan M. Schuman, Chairman
Advisory Social Services Board
